Posted 1:13 PM 5/22/2012 : Cyclist trying to beat the heat with a night biking petition
TUCSON - Triple-digit temperatures are keeping some bikers off the trails, but there's a move to work around that, with some riders petitioning the county to let them ride at night.
It can be pretty dangerous to ride your bike in the sweltering heat. Many riders try to ride in the early mornings, but riding the trails at night in Pima County isn't an option.
"I try to get out here in the early morning or in the evening when the sun is starting to set," said cyclist Susan Waites.
For those pedaling in the middle of the day, heat stroke and dehydration are common.
"You just feel the sun burning," Martin Adriaanse said. "During the day, there is really not a good time to ride."
Hundreds of miles of trails all over Pima County allow for some beautiful sightseeing, but not everyone can take full advantage.
The path closes at sundown, putting the brakes on any chance for the average nine-to-five worker to hit the trails.
So Adriaanse and another avid rider created a petition, asking Pima County to allow the trails to open up when the sun goes down
"I'd probably bike here every evening in the summer time," Waites said.
Pima County says their resources are limited, and they close their parks at night for security reasons, but Adriaanse says night riders shouldn't be left in the dark.
"Partying and vandalism is illegal and they should police it," he says, "but people out exercising, they should just be able to do their thing."
With over 1,000 signatures already, Adriaanse hopes that he may be able to change gears on a policy he'd like to see disappear.
Adriaanse plans to present this plan, along with the petitions, to Pima County in just a few weeks, and feels that they will all come to some sort of agreement. Pima County told News 4 Tucson that it's not likely things will change, but that they will consider and review the petition.
