Crime Trackers: Man survives being shot in the back

TUCSON - A devoted father and friend is shot in the back as he was walking home from work. It happened on Swan Road near Broadway last April. It's a busy street, but no one saw who did it, and the victim doesn't even know why.

Todd Hendrickson admits he's lucky to be alive. He showed News 4 his stomach where the bullet exited, and the scar where doctors had to cut his intestines out.

He says he was walking home from work around 9:00 p.m. on April 28, 2012. He says he heard three shots ring out. One hit a car, one went who-knows-where, and the final shot hit him in the back. "I looked around to see how to get away as fast as possible, I saw the blood, I ran out in middle of the street and called 911," he said.

He wasn't paying attention to his surroundings, he said.

"The guy behind me was walking or running or whatever so he was targeting me," Hendreickson said. "I don't have any enemies that I know of that would have reason to shoot me."

So could robbery be the motive? "They didn't steal anything, my iPod, my wallet and they didn't ever touch me physically."

Tera Conley is a friend he called after 911 - she raced down Swan Road to help him. "It was very scary, it's a very surreal thing you don't ever think you're going to see a friend of 20 something years laying in the middle of the road," she said.

She is just as perplexed as Todd about the shooting. They both realize it could've been worse. However she says it's senseless. "He's just your average everyday working person. No one should have to have to walk down the road and worry about whether they get shot in the back."

Tucson Police tell News 4, this was a random case, with no workable leads, so as of now, it's a closed case.

The question is - if this happened to Todd Hendrickson could it happen again?

If anyone has information or was in the area of Swan Road near Broadway you are urged to call 88-CRIME.
