Posted 3:30 PM 6/27/2012 : CPSC announces new safety standards for children's play yards
(NBC) - Home video shows a happy and giggling Danny Keysar.
It's difficult to watch when you realize his life came to an end at just 16 months old.
14-years ago, Danny was in a play yard at his daycare when the top rails collapsed, strangling him.
The play yard was one of millions that had been recalled because of its design, yet it remained in use.
"No one at Danny's childcare home was aware of the recall -- not the owner of the facility, not the family who donated the crib, not the state inspector who had inspected the facility just days before," said Linda Ginzel, Danny's mother.
Now, the consumer product safety commission has approved mandatory play yard standards preventing side rails like this.
The new standards will take effect in December.
While most major manufacturers have altered their designs, millions of the older products are still used second-hand, passed down through generations and sold at garage sales and consignment stores.
"we need to work to educate the public including child care centers and other facilities small and large that offer play yards to ensure they're aware of the new safety standards," said representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois.
"Regulations and strong mandatory standards don't cost us more. They just make sure that our children don't pay the price for safety," said Ginzel.
