Posted 8:53 PM 7/18/2013 : County has new $6 million indoor sports complex
TUCSON - Pima County has a new indoor facility to develop youth sports and league play.
The Sporting Chance Center is at 2100 West Curtis Road, near River Road and La Cholla Boulevard.
The facility cost $6 million and was paid for mostly by Tucson Medical Center through a foundation. The youth sports non-profit, The Tucson Conquistadores, also helped make it possible.
Don Tringali is the center's executive director.
"We think the taxpayers did great," he said. "Because we had very generous private sector partners."
He has been working on the project about 10 years.
"Youth basketball, youth volleyball here is much less developed than other cities of our size," Tringali said. "And a big part of the reason is, we don't have the facilities."
Club Cactus Volleyball Association is one of the groups that appreciate the complex. Bill Lang is their director.
"The average volleyball family or volleyball player spends about 500 to 600 dollars in addition to any kind of tuition that we charge just to drive up to Phoenix," Lang said.
The club travels all over the Southwest.
"I would put this up there as one of the premier sports facilities," Lang said. "Most of the time, you see some of these facilities in a warehouse."
Pima County owns the building and pays some of the operating costs. It is mostly going to be funded by user fees, but they will also have open nights when everybody can take advantage.
