TUCSON - Tucson's bumpy, crumbling roads could soon get fixed, if you're willing to pay for it.

Tuesday City Council discussed the possibility of sending a 100-million dollar bond issue to the voters, all to fix the roads.

Tucson's roads have been a problem for a long time, but this bond idea is relatively new. It came up after the City Manager's office did some polling around town and found 65 percent of people supported the idea. After discussing it the council voted to have a public hearing so everyone can weigh in.

If this were to happen you would have to pay about 18 dollars more a year in property taxes depending on the size of your home.

The city has already shelled out 20 million to fix the roads, but the council said it's not nearly enough. Some members said the problem is big so the solution has to be big.

Council member Regina Romero said, "We have more than 800-million dollars worth of needs in our road system."

Councilman Steve Kozachik said, "My sense is the city has let this get away from them but that doesn't fix the roads by just saying that. We have to fix the roads. We gotta fix the roads, its economic development issue, and we just gotta get it done."

Council members said this is the best way to do it because the voters would decide. They said if the voters are willing to pay more for better roads than that's great. but if not the council will have to come up with something else.
