TUCSON - An eyesore or a look into the future. A project to build modular homes made from shipping containers started four years ago and the controversy rages on.
On Monday, Tucson Councilwoman Karen Uhlich, arranged a meeting at Ward 3 headquarter's between residents, the builders and city and state officials.
The resident's first concern was how four shipping containers stacked on top of each other looked in their neighborhood. Bonnie Poulos, who lives near the modular home on Mountain Avenue, says they were also never told the new structure was coming, "The objection is that it doesn't fit into the neighborhood", she said, "and there was no discussion on the part of the architects or the city to introduce the neighbors to this new project or to find out what their concerns might be once it was installed."
There are other concerns like zoning jurisdiction between the city in the state, displaying permits and toxic materials embedded in the shipping containers.
According to Karen Uhlich the builders have done everything right, "This project is clearly in compliance with state and city laws as they stand right now."
But despite the meeting Uhlich admitted that moving forward there is still much to discuss, "It has the potential for affordable green housing although there are concerns about the look and the aesthetic and there are safety concerns."
As far as this modular home staying in the northside neighborhood it is a done deal. The real concern at this point is regulating any future building of shipping container homes in Tucson.
