Grant Road/Oracle Road Intersection Improvement
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE:
Intersection work will begin July 16, 2012. First Phase of the project will be placing temporary traffic signals at the intersection followed by median island removals on east and westbound Grant Road.
This will provide the needed space and traffic control for the contractor to move traffic to the north side of Grant Road so work can begin on the south side of Grant. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction as well as left turn lanes at the intersection of Grant Road and Oracle Road. Business access will be maintained at all times.
Please use caution when traveling in the area. Watch for construction workers and equipment and obey all traffic control.
PROPOSED Work:
This project provides for the widening of Grant Road to six lanes from 15th Avenue east to Castro Street, and median island right turn lane modifications along Oracle Road from Alturas Street south to Rillito Street. As part of the roadway widening, the intersection of Grant Road and Oracle Road will be reconstructed to provide indirect left intersection operations.
The work includes, but is not limited to, removals, construction of new asphaltic concrete and Portland cement concrete pavements, drainage improvements, furnishing and installing traffic signal equipment and electrical street lighting, raised medians, sidewalk, curb access ramps, driveways, signing and striping, utility relocations and modifications to the existing water and sewer systems, landscaping, and other related incidental work.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
First Phase:
During this phase the center median islands along Grant Road will be removed and replaced with temporary asphalt to allow traffic to be shifted to the north side of the project. Other miscellaneous curb, sidewalk and pavement work will take place to prepare the south side of Grant Road for reconstruction. The Grant / Oracle intersection traffic signal will be modified to maintain traffic circulation during construction. Pedestrian sidewalk and street lighting will be maintained along the
north side of Grant Road during this phase. This phase will take approximately one month to complete.
Second Phase:
Major water line reconstruction and storm drain modifications on the south side of Grant Road are scheduled during this phase. Other work during the second phase will include reconstruction of portions of the sanitary sewer system, storm drain manhole reconstruction, lighting and traffic signal conduit installation and ending with new roadbed and pavement installation. This phase will take approximately four months to complete.
Third Phase:
The third phase will consist of constructing the north half of Grant Road including street lighting, traffic signal infra-structure, completing pedestrian crossing signals and installing curbing and pavement. This work will take approximately four months to complete.
Fourth Phase:
Oracle Road reconstruction between Rillito and Alturas will take place during this phase. Work will include median island modifications, storm drain and sanitary sewer reconstruction and modifications. New pavement installation will also be part of this phase. This work will take approximately two months to complete.
Fifth Phase:
The median islands along Grant Road, intersection traffic signals, landscaping, public art, final paving and miscellaneous items will be completed during this time. This work will take approximately two months.
Tucson Modern Streetcar
Construction Update
Please note: Roadway closures indicate areas where roads are closed to vehicular and bicycle traffic. Pedestrian access adjacent to these closures will be maintained at all times. Cyclists must walk their bikes while using the sidewalks.
The following schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions and/or equipment failure.
Downtown
• On Monday, August 13, through Friday, August 17, the pedestrian access at the
intersection of Congress Street and Sixth Avenue will be partially restricted. The
temporary restrictions allow the contractor to complete electrical work and sidewalk
access ramps.
• The contractor has begun the repair and replacement of a sewer line that extends across Broadway between Church and Stone Avenues. The existing conditions of the sewer lines and manholes require extensive underground work. The boundaries of the work area and safety considerations will require Broadway between Church and Stone Avenues to be completely closed. The closure will be in effect 24 hours-per-day and is expected to be in place through mid-September 2012. There have been some modifications to the Broadway traffic detour plan. Following are details and a revised map of the detour:
• Eastbound Broadway traffic will be reduced to two-through lanes beginning at
Granada Avenue.
• The left travel lane will be detoured north on Church Avenue to Pennington Street,
east on Pennington Street to Stone Avenue and south on Stone Avenue back to
Broadway.
• The right travel lane will be detoured south on Church Avenue to Cushing Street, east to Stone Avenue and north back to Broadway.
• To assist with the flow of detoured traffic, four-way stops will be in place at the
intersections of Cushing Street and Church Avenue and Cushing Street and Stone Avenue. Officers will also be on site to help direct traffic.
• Access to the underground parking garage for tenants of 1 South Church will be
maintained from Church Avenue.
• Parking will not be allowed along Church Avenue between Broadway and Jackson
Street while the detour is in place.
• Sidewalk access will be maintained at all times, however, north and south bound
Church Avenue pedestrians must use the crosswalk on the west side of the
intersection to cross Broadway while intersection work is under way.
• Work hours for the sewer repair and replacement operation will be weekdays, from 6
a.m. to 3 p.m.
Fourth Avenue and University Boulevard
• On Monday, August 13, University Boulevard from Third to Fourth Avenues will be closed. This closure will include the intersection of University Boulevard and Fourth Avenue. The intersection of Third Avenue and University Boulevard will remain open. The closure will be in place while the contractor completes the removal of the existing roadway, underground utility work, rail placement and installation of the OCS.
• The intersection of Fourth Avenue at University Boulevard will be closed to through
traffic on Wednesday, August 15.
• On Friday afternoon, August 17, University Boulevard will be reopened to vehicular,
bicycle and pedestrian traffic between Euclid and Park Avenues. Some parking and lane
restrictions may be in place along the roadway as the contractor completes the
installation of the OCS and streetcar stop.
• At 3 a.m. Monday, August 13, the intersection of Euclid Avenue and University Boulevard will reopen to one travel lane in each direction.
