TUCSON - During the 1950's and 60's doctors across the country urged asthmatic patients to move to Arizona. The warm, dry climate would help them with their symptoms.
They listened, and they stayed, eventually creating families here. Their breathing disorders were often passed on to their children leaving a large amount of kids with breathing problems today.
Pima County alone, has 21,000 children with asthma. It is the number one medical reason kids miss school and COPD is the third leading cause of death in the state.
The American Lung Association does what it can to fund research projects and continue its educational programs in schools across the country. They often rely on donations.
So BAYADA Home Healthcare and the American Lung Association are trying to boost their funds. BAYADA is putting on a country music event called "Fight for Air with Country Flair."
On Sunday June 24th The Maverick on Tanque Verde will be home to some of Tucson's best country musicians who will take the stage for a good cause. Headling the event is country singer LeeAnne Savage. You would never know it by the way she belts out a tune, but she actually has asthma too.
"Before the no smoking ban in bars, i would literally have to leave the stage, go find my purse, dig out my inhaler and hit it before i could go back on stage and continue to sing," said Savage.
Also playing on Sunday will be Andrew Cooper, Jason Curtis, Greg Spivey and Neil Russell. Tickets are only ten dollars and all of the proceeds will go directly to the American Lung Association.
Tickets can be purchased at BAYADA's office at 7070 N. Oracle Road or online at http://lungarizona.org/south.
