TUCSON - Was it a hate crime or was it a crime of passion?
A 29 year old gay man is brutally murdered in 1984. Pima County Sheriff's Cold Case detectives need your help to solve this case.
Detectives say Bob Meyers frequented gay bars and adult book stores. On November 11, 1984 detectives say he was found dead in his midtown apartment. He'd been strangled.
Detective Dan Preuss says, "Strangulation obviously shows the attacker as angry."
Meyers was last seen leaving a bar with a man who was described as having a feminine look.
A composite was drawn from witnesses who saw them together. "He's described as a white male probably late 20's, he's got blonde hair 5'8" about a 150 pounds."
The composite was publicized in local newspapers. Of course that composite is 28 years old so this individual would be at least 25 years older.
The crime scene shows the apartment had been ransacked but detectives say they can't attach a burglary or a robbery motive.
"We don't believe its sexually motivated however we are missing a solid motive at this time."
In reviewing the case today Detective Preuss says they've sent some of the items to a lab. "We've recently taken some DNA off some items, those have all been submitted to a lab, some items are still awaiting a return some items have just not come back with any positive results."
Nearly 30 years have gone by since Bob Meyers was murdered. Detectives today are hoping someone who knew something back then will come forward now so that there can be justice for Bob Meyers.
Detectives have ruled out a "hate crime."
If anyone has information about Bob Meyers or who the person might be in the composite you are urged to call 88-CRIME or 9-1-1.
