In an effort to save more lives on Arizona's roadways this month, the Governor's Office of Highway Safety is partnering with the Tucson Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies to increase seat belt usage throughout the state. As part of the National "Click It or Ticket Campaign," Arizona has developed and promoted the "Buckle Up Arizona...It's the Law!" program, which has been an effective enforcement message in a secondary law state. The enforcement campaign is based upon high visibility and aggressive traffic enforcement with a "zero-tolerance" approach towards seat belt and child safety seat usage. Despite widespread efforts to educate drivers about the importance of wearing seat belts, motor vehicles collisions continue to be the leading cause of death and serious injuries to the citizens of our state. Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. When worn correctly, seat belts have proven to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45% - and by 60% for occupants of pickup trucks, SUVs and mini-vans.
The enforcement mobilization will run from May 21, 2012 to June 3, 2012. Tucson Police Department Traffic Enforcement Officers will be working a special overtime deployment throughout the city, concentrating their efforts in high traffic areas during peak traffic hours. The grant awarded by the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety, using Federal 402 funding, will support the participation of the Tucson Police Department in the national two-week "Buckle Up Arizona" enforcement Campaign. If you have any questions about this deployment or need additional information about the Occupant Protection Laws or local Child Safety Seat programs please call Sgt. Mary Kay Slyter in the Traffic Enforcement Section at 837-7239.
