TUCSON - 225 years ago today, our founding fathers signed the constitution.
It's a day with perfect historical significance for nearly a dozen Southern Arizonans to officially become U.S. citizens.
Their new found loyalty to the U.S. is a badge of pride.
They spent the morning at the Tumacacori National Historic Park celebrating citizenship day by becoming new citizens.
"It's a good thing to become a U.S. citizen. It's an honor," said Andres Martinez.
Martinez has been a permanent resident of the U.S. since 1994, and he said it was time he made the transition to citizenship.
"I just want to thank my family and God first of all, so I'm proud," said Martinez.
He studied the constitution and U.S. History with his family until he was ready.
"All night. --All night," said his kids. "We would help him a lot because there are certain questions he would get confused with, and we just helped him."
Abel Aguilar has lived in the U.S. for 14 years.
He said his mother made the sacrifice leaving their native Mexico for him to have a better education and opportunities.
"From coming from there to here and achieving this is really awesome. It feels really good," said Aguilar.
Lulu is originally from China.
She said she wants to become more involved in volunteer work now that she's a citizen.
"You know to become citizens and now I can live and do extra stuff," she said.
The new citizens said they want to strengthen their communities to make their new country even better.
