(NBC NEWS) - Hurricane Sandy's high winds have tipped over a construction crane on a New York City high-rise.

A portion of the crane is now dangling from a building in a crowded part of midtown Manhattan, just two blocks from Central Park.

Officials say it is too dangerous to remove the crane at this time.

Surrounding streets and buildings are being evacuated as a precaution while authorities discuss their next move.

Hurricane Sandy is bearing down on a wide swath of the Northeast Coast, centered along the New Jersey shore, causing high wind and heavy rain which is expected to get worse as the night goes on.
