TUCSON - Today in Arizona more and more children are being removed from their homes and there's no where to place many of them. Some are sleeping in CPS offices while others are being shipped out of the county.
On Monday, Casa de los Ninos held an foster parent orientation hoping to find people with open hearts and open doors.
According to Casa de los Ninos, it is estimated that nearly 13,000 children are currently in foster care in Arizona.
Besides caring for the immediate needs of displaced children, Casa de los Ninos is also a foster parent agency licensed through CPS. The orientation's intent was to give people a clear view of what being a foster parent is all about.
Applicants like Desiree Barnhardt say they are willing to do their part to alleviate the crisis, "I know there are thousands of kids in Tucson who need homes," she said, "and I am willing to open up my home to help the community and kids that are in need."
Not everyone has what it takes. The process of becoming a foster parent is lengthy, the demands exhausting. Custody is only temporary and there are many goodbyes.
But according to Casa de los Ninos Foster Care Supervisor, Sam Dyer, those who walk the path say the rewards outweigh it all, "Most foster parents I talk to say that they get much more out of caring for these kids than what the kids get."
Casas de los Ninos currently has 112 foster families that it oversees. The organization is hoping to greatly add to that number. Right now, 100 more foster families are needed to handle the current crisis.
