TUCSON - Fallout from a controversial cartoon published in the University of Arizona's student newspaper, The Daily Wildcat, has both the newspaper and cartoonist apologizing.

The cartoon appeared in the campus newspaper published on October 17 depicting a conversation between a father and his son.

"Ya know son, if you ever tell me you're gay...I will shoot you with my shotgun, roll you up in a carpet and throw you off a bridge," the father in the comic strip says.

The son in the comic strip responds: "Well, I guess that's what you call a fruit roll up."

D.C. Parsons, a 27-year-old art student at the UA, who penned the comic told News 4 Tucson that it was meant to be humorous.

"It was sincerely meant as a joke," Parsons said. "Just part of my humor is to challenge the status quo as far as social taboos are concerned."

Parsons was fired from the student newspaper as fallout from the comic took hold on campus and in the community.

"This is absolutely not what I wanted for my comics, I just wanted to make people laugh and make them think.

Parsons said he has had previous run-ins with the paper's management about his humor. He was edited down in those cases.

Kristina Bui, the editor of the Daily Wildcat, told News 4 Tucson that it was her responsibility to finalize the pages at the end of each night.

"I made the mistake of automatically finalizing this one without considering the perceptions and the perspectives of others," Bui said in a statement.

Still, Parsons said the controversy that followed the comic was not his intention.

"If this is offending people as it obviously is, my sincerest apologies," Parsons said.
