Posted 6:16 PM 6/14/2012 : Canoes on Rose Canyon Lake for first time
TUCSON - The Girl Scouts made history while also learning water safety techniques.
It was the first time any type of boat was allowed on Rose Canyon Lake, and Girl Scouts said they're honored to have that privilege.
While the seven-acre lake has been on Mt. Lemmon since 1960, boats have never touched the water. Instead, the lake has been a rainbow trout fishing hot spot, but now, at least for the month of June and July, several groups will have access to canoe this lake as well.
A rule change by the Fish and Game Commission last year is making this education and training opportunity possible for the Girl Scouts. "Any time that they're on a boat, they'll know from now on what they'll need to do in order to be safe on the boat," said Karen Klima from Arizona Game and Fish. That's the goal of this venture, to teach youth about water safety and get them outdoors. "Breathing fresh air, using their muscles and communicating together as sisters," said Kristin Culliney with Girls Scouts of Southern Arizona.
Youth-oriented service programs can apply for a permit to use canoes on this lake from 9:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursdays.
This opportunity is not for the public at large.
Entry into the lake for swimming, wading or other devices such as pool toys as well as float tubes and rafts is prohibited.
