Posted 12:28 PM 8/21/2012 : Campaign Trail: Obama Fights Back
(NBC NEWS) - President Obama came out swinging Monday, taking on accusations from opponents that his plans for health care and tax reform will hurt the economy.
The president cited statistics he hopes will soothe voters' concern after his opponents accused him of taking billions from Medicare to pay for "Obamacare".
Meanwhile, Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan campaigned in New Hampshire, one week ahead of the Republican convention.
Romney said the president's plan to tax the wealthy will hurt the economy.
"What they don't understand is that raising taxes slows down growth, and it's like a dog chasing it's tail, you are never going to get to the balanced budget," Romney said.
President Obama fired back, saying "I think it makes a lot more sense, and have put out a detailed plan for a balanced approach that combines tough spending cuts with asking people like me, millionaires and billionaires, to do a little bit more."
The president also explained why his campaign is pressuring Romney to release more of his tax returns.
