TUCSON - It's estimated that 1.5 million people were diagnosed with cancer last year. It's a disease that invokes fear, and for many survivors, a new perspective on life.
With exercise, research shows a lower risk of reoccurrence. One local mammographer is helping those fighting the disease to take charge of their health.
As the sun rises, boot camp begins. "I remember the first few times I came here, and it was hard," said Colorectal Cancer survivor Lana Holstein.
"I said that was too tough for me. They're tough and I am not," said Breast Cancer survivor Lupita Hi O'Connell.
In charge is a petite sarge, packed with major attitude.
"Put your weights down. It seems like you guys are a bit too chatty this morning; it seems like you need a little cardio," said Beat Cancer Boot Camp founder Anita Kellman.
As tough as Kellman's class may be, it seems like peanuts compared to the fight these women have already faced.
"I guess I am drafted by cancer. I don't want to be there but I guess I must go," said Hi O'Connell.
Each person at camp is somehow affected by cancer. Some are even going through treatment right now.
"Everybody always talks about surviving. I think it's way more than surviving, it's thriving," said Holstein.
"Instead of feeling sorry for myself, joining this group - it really gave me a lot of hope," said Hi O'Connell.
"I always tell them don't give me that cancer card. You got to do something. My motto with them is challenge yourself but know your limitations," said Kellman.
It's a way to take control of their health by modifying exercises to fit their ability at any point in time.
"The funny thing about cancer it makes you really at least me really stand back and really appreciate life," said Holstein.
Kellman puts on a boot camp three times a week. She's been volunteering her time since she started the boot camp eight years ago. The 4th Annual Boot Camp Challenge will be held on March 17th. For more information go to www.beatcancerbootcamp.com.
