TUCSON - Two men are in custody after a police chase that stemmed from an armed bank robbery Wednesday.

It began when police received a 9-1-1 call from employees of Bank of the West on North Swan, saying that they had been robbed.

The suspects were then spotted near 22nd Street and Kino Parkway when police closed in. The suspects took off and the chase began, leading police to a residential area near 26th and Curtis.

"We saw that there was a bunch of police and helicopters and everything, we didn't know what was going on," said Arianna Santa Cruz, who lives nearby where the chase ended and saw the heavy law enforcement presence in the neighborhood.

As police searched for the armed robbers who got away with the stolen cash, Arianna said her cousins, who were visiting from Mexico, were questioned by police.

"They said that [one of the suspects] had on a black sweater with a logo on the front and a hat, and my cousin was wearing that so that's why they stopped him," Arianna said.

Police caught up with the suspect's vehicle where one of the suspects was detained.

"The other [suspect] fled from the officers through a nearby yard. There was a confrontation between that individual and our officers in that yard and one of our officers was bit by a pit bull," said Sgt. Chris Widmer, of Tucson Police Dept.

The other suspect took off on foot but was quickly found.

"He was bit by one of our canines and both males are in custody now," Widmer said.

Widmer told News 4 Tucson that the suspects will likely face armed robbery charges, however, because it is so early in the investigation, there could be more charges coming their way.
