Posted 6:33 PM 9/21/2012 : As Tucson Greyhound Park ceases shots, concerns still remain
TUCSON - While the manager for the Tucson Greyhound Park has stopped giving female dogs testosterone shots almost three weeks ago, there are still many concerns surrounding the park itself.
Since Tom Taylor has operated the Tucson Greyound Park, he says he has never had to license the more than 700 dogs housed there.
Taylor told News 4 Tucson that the "don't need licenses because they're regulated by the state," which he says already requires proper vaccinations for the animals. However, Tucson Council Member Steve Kozachik says that's simply not true.
"Every other dog owner in this region has to pay licensing fees," Kozachik told News 4 Tucson.
Kozachik says the City of South Tucson is missing out on the financial benefits that go along with these licenses.
With a $225 kennel fee and a $45 licensing fee per dog, the financial benefit adds up to tens of thousands of dollars for the city.
"This track has skirted the law too much and frankly it's the Pima County Animal Care Center who has been asleep at the wheel on this," Kozachik said, adding later: "They're the ones who should have been out there charging these fees."
That's one of the reasons why the county began inspecting the dogs this week.
With the dogs off the shots, Taylor says they're considering adopting out the females, if the dogs in heat create a dangerous situation.
Kozachick has other concerns still, including the safety of the track and the continued care of the animals.
