Arts & Culture Guy: Events & movies

Posted 4:34 PM 3/7/2013 : A play, an opera, book festival and movies in this weeks Arts & Culture

TUCSON - A play, an opera, the book festival and some new movies are all in today's Arts & Culture Guy's segment.

Herb Stratford has the details:

The classic Neil Simon play "The Sunshine Boys" is on stage at the Temple of Music and Art now through March 23.

The comedy tells the story of a pair of performers who used to be partners but now can't stand each other. Will they reunite for the performance everyone wants them to do or just fight about it? You may remember the Hollywood movie starring George Burns and Walter Matthau, but having a chance to see this classic on stage is great.

Arizona Opera's production of "Il Travatore" will be on stage at the Tucson Music Hall on March 9 & 10. The opera features rivals in love, mistaken identity, a character burned at the stake and of course lots of great costumes and singing. With just one more opera in the 2012-2013 season, don't miss your chance to see this rarely performed work live.

This week's biggest cultural event is the annual Tucson Festival of Books which takes place at the University of Arizona. The 4th largest book festival in the country is a celebration of all things written and of writers. An additional nighttime event of note is the free screening of "Eight Men Out," the John Sayles movie about the 1919 Chicago "Black Sox" and the World Series scandal. The movie is set to play outdoors at the Geronimo Plaza courtyard at dusk on Friday night.

Now here's a look at this week's new movies:

Niels Arden Oplev, the acclaimed director of the original "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", makes his American theatrical debut with the new action thriller, "Dead Man Down". Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace star as two strangers who are irresistibly drawn to one another by their mutual desire for revenge. The film co-stars Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard and Dominic Cooper, from a screenplay by J.H.Wyman (Fringe).

Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant land of Oz, he thinks he hit the jackpot - fame and fortune are his for the taking - that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams).
