TUCSON - For the first time in 20 years the University of Arizona Men's baseball team is hosting an NCAA regional tournament.
Athletic Director Greg Byrne said the move to Hi-Corbett field helped in the bid to host the tournament, "We have a great stage and we want people to come here and visit and see the community because we know people come here and say, 'boy, this would be a great place to live, great place for business, great place for my son or daughter to go to school."
The move from Sancet Field has generated about $100,000 extra revenue that the UA did not have last year. Byrne said Arizona's three-game series against Arizona State University last weekend generated $95,000 in ticket revenue without any concession revenue. He said last year's entire season the UA had $69,000.
For fans like Dave Federhar the move has been worth it, "I think with the crowd we've had at Hi-Corbett and the cheering that's going on there it juices the guys up, they energize. We've had a lot of come back wins."
Federhar has been a fan since the last 1950s and says Hi-Corbett is more inclusive for fans and offers easier access," it's a big league feel for the guys, the recruits and the teams that come in."
The McKale ticket office said tickets for Arizona's Friday game have sold well, however general admission seats are still available beginning at just $10. Tickets can be purchased online, or at Hi-Corbett ticket office.
