TUCSON - The impending closing of TUSD schools has many parents in Tucson concerned. The east side was especially hit hard in the last round of closures. Now once again, Carson Middle School is on the chopping block and parents are fighting to keep it open.

On Monday, a community meeting was held at the school. Carson Parents say a cloud has been hanging over the school for years, always under a constant threat of closing. For Sheila Glanz, who has a child who attends Carson, this is the last straw and she is fed up with TUSD, "If the school does close," said Glanz, "I will be one of the parents that will say enough is enough and I will remove my child from TUSD." Strong words from a parent who has seen school after school closed on the East Side.

TUSD Board Member, Michael Hicks, attended the meeting and believes more school closures on the East Side could have a very negative impact, "Out of the nine schools we closed a year ago seven were on the east side", he said. "If you continue to close schools on the east side or in a particular area you are destroying that area.

For some families keeping Carson open is out of special need. Shauna Holden's daughter Mary had brain surgery a year ago and copes with several disabilities. "I don't know of another school that would be willing to accommodate Mary", said Holden. "She went to Seacrist (Middle School) and they thought it was just too many disabilities, Carson went above and beyond. They welcomed her."

The meeting was held to not only give parents a stage to voice their opinions but to also come up with a plan to keep Carson Middle School from closing. Public hearings on the closures will be held December 8 and 10.
