Posted 11:17 PM 6/20/2013 : 9-month-old boy recovering after near drowning in Drexel Heights
DREXEL HEIGHTS - A near-drowning incident at a home near Ajo and Camino Verde sent a 9-month-old baby boy to the hospital Thursday.
It happened when the child's mother was playing with her twin infants in a kiddy pool in their backyard. She was taking one of the twins inside when the infant boy flipped in a floatie-style seat.
"An uncle that was there had observed that the little boy that was there had tipped over and was struggling in the water, so mom got the little boy out of the pool, called 9-1-1 and performed CPR on him," said Tracy Koslowski, a spokesperson for Drexel Heights Fire Department.
Koslowski said the child was conscious and crying when first responders arrived.
Captain Scott Bird said when responding to these types of calls they have to come mentally prepared for any situation.
"If the child is truly unconscious and not breathing... if you don't know the skills then you're delaying the child getting some help," Bird told News 4 Tucson.
Luckily in this case, the boy was breathing when crews arrived.
The boy was taken to a local hospital as a precaution but family tells News 4 Tucson that the boy appears to be "okay" and is eating and responding well.
This is the ninth water incident in Pima County this year, the eighth time it was involved children.
