Arizona teachers will see pay increase in near future

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - Arizona Tax Research Association said teachers will be making 20-percent more in the next three years.

The State of Arizona recently responded to demands for higher teacher pay with a plan to increase base K-12 funding to provide a 20-percent teacher pay increase by the fall of 2020.  ATRA's research said that jumps the Arizona average pay rank from 40 to 16.

ATRA used the national education association numbers which are close to the state auditors report.

"We assumed that the 20% by the 2019 plan would be implemented on schedule and then we took numbers and applied them to the national rankings to see where that would put Arizona 3 years from now," said ATRA Senior Research Analyst Sean McCarthy.

Jason Freed with Tucson Education Association disagrees.

"Arizona is 50th in salary and is 49th in per pupil spending. Arizona was ranked as the 51st state to teach in. Those are the absolute real numbers," said Freed.
