Amphi Lunch Lady makes an impact on students

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON --  Colleen Thomas is not your average school cafeteria worker. She has a gift of using art to connect with kids by drawing pictures on the lunch menu chalkboard.

"I had about four or five kids that just absolutely loved them and that actually brought a little tear to my eye... Just to see they do pay attention and they do like them," said Colleen Thomas, food service manager at Mesa Verde Elementary School.

Thomas says she likes to think she is making a difference in each child's day with a little pun or a fun drawing.

"They're really special because they're so creative," said Bailey Schleicher, 3rd grader at Mesa Verde School. "The first time I saw them, I went up to lunch and I said colleen, that's a really cute drawing because it was a kitty, and I love kitties."

Bailey is just one of many kids at the school who enjoy her drawings.

Thomas says it is a big reason she loves her job.

"Honestly I think it's just the interaction with the kids," said Thomas. "I've been doing it for a long time and I never thought I'd ever be a lunch lady, but it's great."

Each sign takes about 30 minutes and she says they are not going anywhere because they do make a difference.

"They do like them," Thomas said. "They have a couple times said that's a cute picture. Especially if I make jokes, I hear the jokes throughout the line as they come down the line, so that was fun. It's fun."
