Tucson lawyer, assistant arrested on federal obstruction of justice charges

TUCSON - A Tucson lawyer and his assistant were taken into custody Wednesday for allegedly obstructing justice, tampering with a witness and assisting an offender in avoiding apprehension in a criminal case.

According to officials, FBI agents arrested 59-year-old Rafael F. Gallego and 39-year-old Ricardo Gallego Wednesday morning on one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, one count of conspiracy to commit false statements; one substantive count of obstruction of justice, one count of accessory after the fact
and one count of conspiracy to tamper with a witness.

The accusations reportedly occurred from Jan. 2017 to Oct. 2017. Officials said the two were accused of providing false information to agents with Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, as well as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Arizona.

The two were accused of having knowledge of the commission of a drug trafficking offense, provided assistance to the offender in order to hinder and prevent the offender’s apprehension, trial and punishment, conspired to corruptly persuade an individual to provide false information to law enforcement investigators.

Officials said Rafael and Ricardo Gallego could face a maximum 20 years in federal prison for witness tampering, 1- years for obstruction of justice and five years for the other charges.
