4 Your Health: dentist visit before surgery; easier for men to lose weight; delayed HPV vaccine,

Posted: Updated:

Cancer patients who are facing surgery may want to visit their dentist first.

A new study found a pre-surgery dental check-up may reduce complications after the procedure. The study included nearly 16,000 patients who underwent some type of cancer surgery. Those who were cleared by a dentist before their operation were less likely to develop pneumonia or die within the next 30 days.

Women have harder time losing weight

Women often complain they have a harder time losing weight than men and they may actually be right.

Researchers in Denmark tracked a group of overweight adults following a low-calorie diet. After 8 weeks, men lost significantly more weight than women and had larger drops in fat mass and heart rate.

Women did show more improvement in cholesterol, hip circumference, and blood pressure.

Okay to wait for HPV vaccine

It's not too late for older teens to get the HPV vaccine.

A new Kaiser Permanente study found catch-up HPV vaccination, between 14 and 20 years old, helped protect against cervical cancer, when all three doses were completed.

But there was no significant protection in women who got their first dose in their early 20's.
