TUCSON - Phoenix Democratic congresswoman and native Tucsonan, Kyrsten Sinema is poised to be Arizona's next senator.

She's running ads and building name recognition. Pima County Democratic Party Chairwoman Jo Holt argues this is the time to turn Arizona blue.

"People understand that if you're going to do anything to stop the wrecking ball that is this administration, you got to change Congress," Holt said.

An NBC News-Marist poll out this week shows Sinema comfortably ahead of her three potential GOP challengers this fall, in a race which will determine who fills retiring Republican Jeff Flake's open seat.

Sinema leads by 10 over former state senator Kelli Ward, by 11 over Tucson Congresswoman Rep. Martha McSally and by 25 over former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

However, the numbers don't give Pima County GOP chair David Eppihimer pause.

she's a democrat senate candidate in a red state and she has to do what she's doing so she's doing it. when she's running against a hardened republican candidate to run TV ads and radio ads and be effective, it'll be a different race.

Eppihimer argues President Trump won't be a drag on Republicans in Arizona this fall. Eppihimer believes the real campaign will start after the August primary.

"It's not who gets out of the gate first, it's who crosses the finish line first," Eppihimer said. "She won't win a statewide race in Arizona it won't happen.
Holt believes this year a Democrat will be elected to the senate from the Grand Canyon State for the first time since the late 1980s

"This is the time to protect our democracy," Holt said. "This is the time, this is the place.  It's now or never. This is our opportunity."

Arizona's 2018 primary election is set for August 28. You must register to vote by July 30 in order to cast a ballot.
