N4T Investigates: Cost of new water rates

Posted: Updated:

Water rates will soon be going up for Tucson Water customers, but before they do our News 4 Tucson Investigators figured out just how much the new rates are going to cost you.

Right now the average customer's water bill is $35.20. Under that new rates that is expected to go up to $37.97 in 2019 and $41.05 in 2020. Leading to an overall extra cost of $103.24 over the two year period.

"We challenged ourselves to make them as low as possible and bring them down about a half a percent per year," said Tucson Water Director Timothy Thomure.

However, during a May city council meeting, several residents talked about how the increases would affect them.

"The only opportunities that I have to continue to live in my home is to ask you please to consider other means to finance what has to happen with water other than laying it on the back of the ratepayer," said one Tucson resident.

The new plans also calls for increases to the service rate and reclaimed water rate.

Reclaimed water will go up 6.9%, service charges will be increased 17.6%.

The low-income assistance program will also change under the new plan. Low-income customers used to be given 50% off their bill. They will now be given the base rate plus the first 1,500 gallons for free.

Tucson city officials were considering a 4-year plan. They voted 6-1 to adopt a 2-year plan.

The new rates start on July, 2nd.
