Zoo 4 You: Baby tapir is all grown up

Posted: Updated:

We have watched him grow up, now Jed Dodds has an update on the tapir at the Reid Park Zoo in this segment of Zoo 4 You.

Six months ago we introduced the cutest baby boy tapir.  We named him Iibu, which is a common plant that tapirs eat.

When tapir babies are born, they look very different from their mothers. They have stripes that go down their sides, which helps them to blend into the vegetation on the ground in case they need to hide from a predator.

Now at 6 months old and weighing in at over 200 pound, Iibu more resembles the coloration of his mom.  Although he is still nursing, he gets most of his nutrients from the fruits and vegetables in his diet. Tapirs are made for the water and Iibu is a very athletic swimmer.  Iibu is hitting all of his milestones and we are excited to see what the future has in store.
