Baffert family has fond memories of Rillito Park as Belmont approaches

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - Four years older than his brother Bob, Bill Baffert looks out at Rillito Park in Tucson with a joyous smile.

"This is where we started," Baffert said. "This is it, Sonoita, Tucson. If you win a race, you go out to dinner that night and you spend more money than you did winning the race, but it was a blast."

44 years later, Bob Baffert is on the precipice of a second Triple Crown in three years. Bill, who now manages the family ranch in Nogales will be right alongside his little brother at Belmont Park Saturday. They'll be anxiously watching Justify.

"You don't really enjoy the day because you're so nervous," Baffert said. "You're nervous for the horse, you're nervous for Bob, you're nervous for the owners. what's going to happen, nobody knows, there's 100,000 people."

In 2015, when Bob's American Pharaoh won racing first Triple Crown in 37 years, Bill was vacationing in Italy.

"I'm very lucky in Venice and I told Bob either you send me back to Venice and win again or I'm going to the race," he said. "The only thing I'm sorry is that my mom and dad aren't alive. My dad, he loved this business and he lived through Bobby. Every race Bob won, it was like he won it. My mom and dad are both looking down and I think they're going to say, you know what, let's win another one and make history."
