Legal sports betting in Arizona?

Posted: Updated:

A recent decision by United States Supreme Court is fueling interest in legalizing sports gambling in Arizona.

On Monday the Supreme Court struck down a law banning sports betting nationwide. The decision means it's now up to individual states to decide if they want to allow sports betting.

"I think it's great because it's happening anyways. Nevada is bringing in all the revenue from it so why not share it with the other states," said business owner Brian Bouffard.

Bouffard owns the Old Father Inn in Marana, one of the few places in southern Arizona that carry off-track betting on horse and greyhound racing.

"For the establishments that will be handling it I don't see a big increase in business for them but I do see a lot of tax money for the state," said Bouffard.

Before any bets can be placed though, Arizona elected officials must first pass new laws allowing sports betting in Arizona.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has already come out in favor of sports gambling.

Tweeting "This is positive news. We have been working on a modernized gaming compact. This ruling gives Arizona options that could benefit our citizens and our general fund."
