FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - One man is on a years-long journey that will make him the youngest person ever to visit all 417 U.S. National Park sites.

Mikah Meyer started his journey at just 19 years old when his father passed away at the age of 58 from cancer. He says that he felt he needed to live the life his father never had the chance to. So, he packed up all his belongings and drove.

Every year, Meyer took a road trip, until he turned 25, that’s when he decided to retire. He finished graduate school and renovated a white van that he now calls home.

“I didn’t know how hard it would be,” he said. “Starting was maybe easiest, but it’s definitely been harder than I thought it would be.”

Along the way, he has seen over 200 parks and has pushed to change stereotypes.Growing up in Nebraska, Meyer says he didn’t meet another openly gay person until he was 19 and says he didn’t see any representations in the media of LGBTQ people outside of the bars and the beach.

“I had no role models, especially as a gay person who loves the outdoors,” said Meyer. “In doing this trip, I want to be open and honest about who I am as a gay man that loves the outdoors as a way to help kids and adults around the world know that whoever they are and whatever parts of their interests they enjoy, they can do them no matter what the stereotypes say.”

Meyer has already seen hundreds of parks and is planning his biggest trek for later this year.

“There are 23 sites in Alaska and only a few of them can be reached by vehicle,” said Meyer. “I’ve been planning a year in advance to tackle Alaska this summer.”

In addition to traveling, he also speaks at churches and organizations from Hawaii to Phoenix. Follow Meyer on Facebook or go to his website to find out where he will be next.
