Parents react to possible Thornydale Elementary closure

Posted: Updated:

MARANA- The Marana School District is considering closing Thornydale Elementary School next year. A parent of a Thornydale Elementary student created a Facebook Page called 'Help Save Thornydale from Closing'.

Kitt Settlemeyer, the parent behind the Facebook page, has a 9-year-old autistic son, Shepard, enrolled at Thornydale Elementary. She said the school changed his life.

"When you're child is non-verbal at one school, and you come to a school, where he is coming home talking about his teacher Ms. Bravo. Now he loves school he is all psyched to go," she said. "He is no longer combative. He has learned so much. Now, at just 9-years-old, he is writing full stories."

Settlemeyer said she is overwhelmed by the community support for the Facebook page she created. The page have more than 200 likes.

The governing board is holding public meetings. For more on the meeting and to see the MUSD statement, click here.
