Meeting scheduled to discuss closing of Thornydale Elementary

Posted: Updated:

The Marana School District is considering closing Thornydale Elementary School next year.

The governing board is inviting the public to a March 27 meeting at 6 p.m. at Thornydale Elementary School, 7651 N. Old Father Drive.

If you can’t attend the meeting, you can email your thoughts to MUSD6@maranausd.org, or use the "Let's Talk communication tool on the district website.

If the school is closed, students would most likely attend Quail Run or Butterfield elementary schools.

According to a news release from the district:

This is being considered due to declining enrollment and the need to ensure school sustainability and fiscal responsibility.  Over the past several years, the Marana district has closely monitored student enrollment numbers at Thornydale Elementary School. A school built in 1974, with a historical high enrollment has steadily declined the past eight years to an enrollment of 307 this school year. In addition, there are no new homes projected to be built in the future which would contribute to growth in the Thornydale area.  As state budgets have also steadily declined and costs associated with building maintenance and utilities have continued to increase, school enrollment is vitally important to the sustainability of a school.
