Father has questions after 5-year-old daughter is run over by a bus

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX - A grieving father has questions about how his 5-year-old daughter ended up getting hit by a bus in the parking lot of a Motel 6.

"Certain things are called mistakes and certain things could have been prevented," says Mr. Johnson who asked we don't use his first name. Johnson's daughter Makinzie Johnson was struck and killed by a tour bus outside of the Motel 6 near I-17 and Northern Avenue.

Johnson says his little girl was with her mother on what he thought was a vacation when he got the call no parent is every prepared for.

"All Makinzie told me was she was on a vacation, 'We're going on a vacation daddy.'"

The bus driver showed no signs of impairment, and police are not recommending any charges against the mother in this case because they believe it was an accident. Johnson isn't so sure and is trying to grieve while also holding back his anger.

"She was always smiling, always talking about love, caring and love. Love and caring. I just feel like she didn't have to go like that," Johnson said.

The family is also struggling with the expense of paying for a funeral, which they hope to have back in their home state of Ohio.

Johnson's fiancee has created a GoFundMe page for Makinzie's funeral expenses.
