N4T Investigators: Insurance complaints

Posted: Updated:

Evelyn Brixler and Patricia Furlani have never met, but both of them say they are dealing with the same problem.

Despite calls, complaints, and promises, the women can't get insurer Bankers Life to pay them the money they feel they're owed.

"It's my money. I'm not asking for their money. I'm asking for my money," said Furlani.

"I feel scammed because that's not what they told me when I bought the policy. They circled all the things I'm supposed to get and I'm not getting any of them," said Brixler.

Both Brixler and Furlani say they have been paying into end of life insurance plans for nearly a decade.

Brixler has paid nearly $20,000 in premiums, Furlani says her policy is worth $83,000.

Neither woman says she can care for herself or perform basic activities of daily life on her own.

However, both say that when they contacted Bankers Life about their insurance policy their claims were denied.

"I feel like they said I basically need to be in bed dead before I could start using it and I says I need to use it now," said Brixler.

News Four Tucson Investigator Nick VinZant contacted Bankers Life about Brixler and Furlani's claims.

In a series of emails Bankers Life says they acted in accordance with their policies.

"While privacy policies preclude us from discussing individual cases, we can share that we have spoken with both policyholders to help further explain the policy benefits provided by their insurance. We carefully review and pay all claims in accordance with our policy contracts and industry requirements," said a spokesperson for Bankers Life.?

Furlani disagrees. She says she meets all the criteria listed in her policy to be declared "functionally incapacitated".

"It annoys me a lot because we've been fighting now for over a year for this," said Furlani's daughter Susan Underwood.

Furlani is currently appealing her claim with Bankers Life.
