Tucson's own Mr. Hockey stays sharp on the ice

Posted: Updated:

With the sharpest blades, and the coldest ice, comes the warmest feeling for one Tucsonan.

"I crashed into the boards, face down on the ice, gloves came off, stick's on the other side of the ice," recalls hockey player Bill Herrett. "I grabbed a rag and blew my nose and said 'God i love this game!'"

For a long time, even though it may not seem like it, the game has loved Herrett back.

"I played the pee wee league in Toronto at the Maple Leaf Gardens," recalls Herrett. "Then I picked up with a Phoenix team, and I really got back into it when I moved down here to Tucson."

While he has slowed down some, his love of the game endures.

"I still have some legs," said Herrett. "I'm not fast, I just play my game and try to be in the right place in the right time."

Herrett has had plenty of success in his hockey career - including a seven goal game against an Albuquerque team, and the ever-modest Herrett didn't want to take credit.

"The other team was just having a really off night."

That seven goal game is just one memory, of Herrett's 70 year hockey career. That pee wee game in Maple Leaf Gardens? He played there in 1946.

At the age of 80, he's still playing in a Tucson rec league, no different than any of the other guys on skates.

"I don't expect them to cut me any slack," said Herrett.

Herrett expects to continue playing as long as he's physically able to - which should be a long time. He's recently gone on a diet, lost weight and has played faster.

Bill and his wife Louise have been married for 47+ years. So how'd they meet? Take a look at Louise's excellent story:
