Protected bicycle lanes are coming to Downtown Tucson

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - On Broadway, construction has started on a two-lane bicycle project. From the intersection of N. Toole Ave. and Congress to Aviation Parkway, this protected bike lane is designed to promote a safer entrance for pedestrians and cyclists.

Andy Bemis, Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Coordinator with City of Tucson says the installation is different from the bright green markings currently seen on our Tucson roadways. Bemis says, "There's no crossing. There's a curb that separates people biking from people driving, so what we find is that it's a much more comfortable experience for people on bicycle.”

Since the North side of Broadway was over-built with excess pavement, this particular construction project is re-purposing unused space, making it a cost efficient plan for the city.

Bemis believes with Broadway’s high volume of traffic, this will be a great improvement for the safety, convenience, and comfort of all road users.

This separated bike lane is just the first segment of a longer vision. The city plans to work in phases, eventually expanding the bike lane to Reid Park.

Over the next few months, drivers should expect delays as they travel Westbound on Broadway Blvd. Expected completion of this project is in April.
