Diverging diamond interchange planned for Houghton Road at I-10

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - Southeast Tucson is considered one of Pima County’s fastest growing areas. The Arizona Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration are introducing a plan for a new traffic design.

The proposed plan is a diverging diamond interchange at Houghton Road and Interstate 10 and will be the first design of its kind in Pima County.

Projections indicate that traffic on I-10 in Eastern Pima County will increase 50 percent by 2045 and 500 percent on Houghton, north of 1-10.

Tom Herrmann of ADOT says this new style of traffic interchange will hopefully alleviate traffic and promote safety for the Tucson community. Hermann says, “When you pull up to the traffic light, you will actually cross to the left side of the roadway. The reason this is safer is because you're now turning left on to the freeway or on to the roadway from the freeway exit ramp without crossing traffic. There is much less chance for a crash."

Additionally, those living and working in this area will be able to access I-10 more efficiently. Herrmann says, “It reduces congestion by 80 to 90 percent, because you’re not waiting for left turn traffic lights. It’s a great fit for the people of Southeast Pima County.”

This design will be similar to the diamond diverging interstate at Interstate 88 and Route 59 in Illinois. This reconstruction will provide a parallel type entrance and exit ramps in both directions.

More than 80 diverging diamond interchanges have been built since 2009. ADOT has also announced plans for diverging diamonds at Interstate 17 and Happy Valley Road in Phoenix.

An open house to go over the designs and initial plans is scheduled for Thursday, February 8 at Empire High School. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2020.
