PHOENIX - Police arrested a man in connection to the rape and murder of a woman 30 years after he led police to her body.

According to court documents, Donald Lee Scott reported finding a dead body while driving with his friend in the desert southwest of Carefree Highway and 99th Avenue. Scott led detectives to a female body where they determined she had been shot multiple times. Scott and his friend were released from the scene.

An autopsy and a sexual assault examination were conducted and she was identified as Anne Marie Levee. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner found evidence of recent trauma on her legs and genital area and semen in her vagina. According to the documents, an extensive investigation ensued but leads were exhausted.

In 2003, the case was reexamined and due to scientific advances, the semen was sent for additional DNA testing. The samples were entered into the combined DNA index system, court documents read.

Fast forward to 2016, the Arizona Department of Public Safety laboratory received a generated report that an unknown DNA profile from 2003 now had a match: Donald Lee Scott.

Upon further investigation, detectives found Scott had an extensive criminal history of arrests for weapons, stalking, assault, harassment and attempted sexual assault, per court documents. In 2014, a DNA sample was taken when he was convicted of aggravated assault and served time in state corrections.

According to court documents, once the DPS lab was notified of the match, detectives sent Scott's DNA sample to the lab to confirm it was indeed a match. DPS confirmed last month it was Scott's DNA found on Levee's body 30 years ago.

Police arrested 55-year-old Scott at his Glendale home Friday, Feb. 2. Court documents show Scott denied raping and killing Levee but could not provide any explanation on why his semen was found with her body.

Scott was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail for first-degree murder and sexual assault.
