4 Your Health: warning for pet owners; benefits of going Mediterranean; the cost of asthma

Posted: Updated:

A new study, from the Centers For Disease Control, reveals asthma costs the U.S. economy more than $80 billion a year.

That's a combination of medical expenses, missed work or school days, and deaths from the disease. Experts say the costs are likely even higher because the data did not include people whose asthma was left untreated.

Mediterranean diet good for seniors

A new study from the UK finds the Mediterranean diet could keep people healthy and more independent as they age.

Researchers tracked the health and diet of over 5,000 older adults. Seniors who stuck to a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains were less than half as likely to become frail than those with less healthy diets.

Frailty can increase the risk of falls disability and early death.

Feeding raw meat to pets

A warning for dog and cat owners about the risks of a raw meat diet.

A team of researchers in the Netherlands reports that these products may contain harmful bacteria and parasites. Tests showed a large percentage of commercial raw meat products were contaminated with Listeria, E-coli and Salmonella.

Those types of bacteria may pose a risk to animal and human health.
