TUCSON (KVOA) -- Arizona Congresswoman Martha McSally announced early Friday that she will be running for U.S. Senate, joining the race to replace retiring GOP Sen. Jeff Flake.

McSally, a two-term congresswoman, becomes the third high profile Republican to enter the race. Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, an immigration hardliner, and former state Sen. Kelli Ward, a vocal Trump advocate, are also GOP candidates.

Later today, McSally, a retired Air Force colonel and the first female fighter pilot to fly a combat mission, plans to fly herself across Arizona in a World War II fighter plane to announce her candidacy in Tucson, Phoenix and Prescott.
