Online shopping scams on the rise

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - The Tucson Police Department says during the holidays, several cases of online shopping scams were reported throughout the city.

"People are able to go into a variety of different website and applications on their phones to try and find those deals and many times they can," Lt. Tim Reese said, "they can find great deals, but sometimes they unfortunately become a victim of a crime."

According to Reese, over the past few weeks several Tucsonans shopping for deals on social media sites like Facebook got anything but a bargain. In one case, the thief threatened the victim at gunpoint and demanded cash.

"It wasn't a case of the victim being hurt but at the same point and time that really doesn't matter," Reese said.

Police say it's imperative to take precautions in these situations.

"Make sure you let friends know where you're going, bring a friend if possible, go to a well lit, populated place that's open during regular business hours," Reese said.
