Troopers investigate 3 kids for freeway rock throwing

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON – State troopers are investigating 3 children for throwing rocks at cars on Interstate 19.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officers responded to Interstate 19 near Ajo Way around 4:30 p.m. on January 4. A trooper parked in a nearby neighborhood and caught 3 children who appeared to be throwing rocks at cars on the freeway.

News Four Tucson is not identifying them because they are minors. They are 12, 14 and 15 years old.

The previous day troopers were also called to the area, and a rock hit an officer’s patrol vehicle. A shopping cart was found on the freeway that night.

Detectives are not assuming the 3 children are responsible for all the incidents on both days. The suspects claimed they were copying what they saw on the news the previous day.

They were charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage and endangerment.

Rock throwing in the area is not new. Troopers have been trying to hold rock throwers accountable and prevent future incidents. They made 9 arrests in the past year, according to DPS spokesman Quentin Mehr.
