Baby delivered after mother's homicide doing better

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - A baby boy, who was delivered three months premature after his mother was shot and killed in Tucson, is getting stronger every day. That’s according to the baby’s grandmother, Olga Carreon.

Authorities say Carreon’s 19-year-old daughter, Jasmine Vega, was sleeping inside a home near South Mission Road and West Ajo Way when someone fired shots into the house. Crews responded to the scene around 4:30 AM on Christmas Eve weekend.

Vega was rushed to hospital, but did not survive. She was six months pregnant.

Doctors were able to deliver her baby boy. He is recovering in the hospital, and his grandmother said his condition has stabilized. He has been named Tadeo Vega.

“We’re taking it day by day but he is doing better,” said Carreon.“She left a little piece of her. And we're going to make him happy and be here for that baby.”

No arrests have been made in the case. Several shots were fired at the home. Detectives say it’s unknown if the shooting was random or if someone inside the home was targeted.

Carreon is hoping anyone with information about her daughter’s murder will step forward.

“She was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” she said “Now the baby doesn't have a mother, I don't have a daughter. And they need to pay for what they did.”

Anyone with information is urged to call 8-8-CRIME. All tips can remain anonymous.

The family has started a GoFundMe campaign to cover unexpected expenses. You can find a link here
