Immigration inspection ends with shots fired at agents, car wreck

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON -

What started as a routine inspection at an immigration checkpoint on Christmas Eve ended with Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents being fired upon.

Agents flagged a Ford Escape for secondary inspection at the I-19 checkpoint. The driver of the car fled from the scene and fired shots at agents.

The driver crashed his vehicle near Amado and agents discovered two illegal immigrants had been hiding in the car. The driver and the occupants were all taken to the hospital for evaluation, released and arrested. No agents were injured in the incident.

The driver has been identified as 21 year-old Roberto Ramirez of Tucson. He is facing multiple felony charges.

In the 2017 Fiscal Year, there were 93 assaults on Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents, and 786 assaults on Border Patrol agents nationwide.
