Tucson's coldest morning in over a year

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - As expected, Tucsonans woke up to a hard freeze this morning.

According to 4WARN Meteorologist Jeff Beamish, this morning's official low at Tucson International Airport was 28°. This marks the 7th latest occurrence for the first seasonal freeze, which usually arrives around November 24th. In addition, it's the coldest morning since Tucson bottomed out at 28° on December 18th, 2016.

Temperatures rebound to the mid 50s this afternoon, running roughly 10° below average for late December. Lows tonight won't be as cold as last night, but may still drop to the freezing mark outside of Tucson city limits.

Residents in Oro Valley, Marana, Tanque Verde, Tucson's east side, Vail, Green Valley and Sahuarita likely wake up to the low 30s Saturday morning.

Models indicate a strong warming trend for Christmas weekend. Highs range from the upper 60s Saturday to the upper 70s on Christmas Day. The forecast high of 78° would mark Tucson's warmest Christmas Day since 2005.
