Good grades earn student a new bike before break

TUCSON – A student who overcame academic challenges got a new bike before winter break.

Erin Oliver said her son, Aidan Gaunt, had a rough childhood.

“He just felt dumb,” Oliver said, “and it's been a struggle.”

Michelle Sigafus is one of the educators who has been putting extra effort into Aidan’s grades at Roberts-Naylor K-8.

“It just brings a lot of joy to our school and to our teachers,” Sigafus said. “It's really nice to see that all the hard work that our teachers put into this child pays off.”

The school reached out to the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists. They posted a plea for a bike on social media. Michael Wilkinson at Tucson’s Loop Bicycle Shop answered.

“It all worked out,” Wilkinson said. “I was literally just getting ready to place an order for some other bikes, and I was like, ‘Well, let me see what I can find.’”

A group gave him the bike after school on Thursday.

“I just want to thank them all for helping me get a new bike,” Gaunt said, “and believing me and what I do.”
