4 Your Health: revelations about pregnancy complications; body weight effect on children with asthma

Posted: Updated:

A slightly underactive thyroid may affect a woman's ability to get pregnant.

That's according to a new Harvard study of over 200 women struggling to conceive. Women with unexplained infertility were nearly twice as likely to have an under active thyroid, than those whose partners had fertility issues. Even mild thyroid dysfunction increased the risk of infertility.

Experts say more research is needed to see if adjusting* thyroid levels could help these women conceive.

Lowering the risk of pre-term birth

A small cervical device may help lower the risk of pre-term birth in high-risk women.

Researchers in Italy tested the silicone ring on pregnant women with a short cervix. With it they were half as likely to deliver before 34 weeks,  than women who did not get the device.

More studies are needed though to confirm these findings.

Higher risk for overweight children with asthma

A new study suggests asthma symptoms may be worse for pre-schoolers who are overweight.

Scientists from Duke University found obese kids who did not use an inhaler had 37 more days with symptoms per year than their healthy weight peers. They also had more asthma attacks.

But there was some good news. Inhalers were just as effective in both healthy and overweight children.
